Staying the Course: Exploring reasons why students leave health professional programmes and developing strategies to improve student retention. An NHS North West funded project.

Student attrition from Higher Education is an increasingly important focus for institutions, funding bodies and students as the cost of post-compulsory education continues to rise. There is no simple formula to increase retention across a diverse student population. However by identifying barriers to student success and best institutional practice, the Staying the Course project will make recommendations for realistic steps that can be taken to enhance student retention.

Project aims:

  • Work with existing students in training to understand the factors that influence retention.
  • Work with discontinued students to understand the factors that influenced their decisions to leave
  • Identify and analyse any emerging trends
  • Identify best practice and review North West Universities retention action plans.
  • Benchmark data to available national data.
  • Make recommendations for realistic steps that could be taken to enhance student retention
